Ann Arbor resident, Matthew Grocoff, lives in a restored, 112-year old, net zero energy home. The most recent addition to his eco-friendly lifestyle: a Chevrolet Volt! In addition, the Grocoff’s Volt charges by plugging in to a solar-charged GE Wattstation helping maintain their home’s zero energy standards.

Matthew and his wife Kelly have worked hard to renovate their home, which produces as much or more energy than their family consumes. This 8-year project has fulfilled their goal of creating a home that is a restorative component of its surrounding community.
Since Matthew works out of the home, and his wife has a less than 5 mile commute to work, the Volt was a great option as their sole family vehicle. Like most Volt owners, Matthew was attracted to the 38 miles of all electric range and the backup gasoline generator engine that can take their family wherever they need to go, beyond the daily drive.
According to him, the Volt was the vehicle counterpart to his home. He said, “So many people are surprised to see our home functions just like a regular house, we simply use energy more efficiently. The Volt is the same; it drives like a real car, just more efficient!”
It was also great to hear that Matthew’s family is one of a handful of Volt owners in his neighborhood! The Grocoff’s have had their Volt for two months and already have driven 1,100 all electric miles. Even after taking a few long road trips, they are still averaging over 80 mpg!
