The OnStar data collection and reporting tools have been great for me. I use it a lot to monitor the charge status; getting historical info has been a big added plus. I'm a little surprised our aggregate is only 67% electric: I'm at about 80% and figured that's probably about average.
The 3-year OnStar included is a tangible benefit to Volt owners and a fair trade for the info collection Chevy gets. I also had no problem with Blink/ecotality collecting info on my home charging station for its first 2 years (though as far as I care, they can collect it for life if they want).
I'm surprised anyone would choose not to activate Onstar with 3 years free. For a 3-month deal, I might not have activated - although if I had, for the value I'm getting from Onstar, I surely would have renewed. The live-navigation and download to the car's nav system is worth it alone, for the reduction in risk of accident from trying to key-in addresses while stopped at lights or pulled over on the road. As it is, now, I'm very close to buying the retrofit kit for my daughter - mainly for the same live-navigation feature.

Volt is SUPER great! OnStar is great for aggregating the data. MyVolt web is great for letting me see the data. ... and for
letting me monitor the charge level... even when far away...
It tells me I am 91% electric in my driving... I am happy about that. I have not yet bought gas... and have 3/4 of the original tank left after 1800 miles.
LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm grateful to On Star for performing such a public service. The world needs to know this car, and all the electric cars out there and lowering the price of gas and oil as we need only American sources more and more. Buy electric, buy a Volt (that seems the best of the bunch from my adventures into buying an electric). The Tesla, the Leaf, all are good, but the range issue made this a no brainer. Until the plug in infrastrucutre is in place, the Volt will own the issue.

My wife and I served more than 20 years each in the US Air Force. This is truly the great nation with one great threat, oil, and our addiction to this $400 billion dollar annual drag on our economy. Americans are routinely taught to ask the question, what benefit is this to me personally, and often not to the nation. The Air Force for me, taught community, and how the one contributes to the whole. For the purposes here, this is a statement on microeconomics over macroeconomics. We now spend $400 billion every year and send that money to places who really don't care for our freedoms, individualims, relgious tolerance, and as my wife can attest to, little rights for women. They can't even drive in many of these countries. And the unsaid, but well known fact, we spend nearly another $400 billion annually protecting the oil baron's oil resources. We patrol the oil highway at enormous cost disadvantage. Every dollar spent on defending oil, and paying for oil must be added to the cost of every goods and services competing for shelf space across the globe. And the real winners? Everyone who competes against our products and services. They get the befit of our payments to protect the oil they then buy. China, Japan, Germany, all can sell at lower cost as we rack up enormous costs for a product we need to get off. I went out, and for the good of us all, bought a Volt. The fact that I now see it is fun to drive, economical over its life, and a scientific marvel aside, this also proved a great choice for a car. I pray ALL the electric car manufacturers make it, from Tesla, the true first proponent of mass production, to the Leaf, to the Volt, to the Prius, all of them We need to get off oil.

to correct the record, onstar is NOT a chevy requirement for owning the volt. indeed, apparently only about 10% of volt buyers have activated onstar. when i purchased my car, an aftermarket manager at the dealership gave me the sales pitch on onstar, but i did have the right to turn down the offer and indeed i did decline the offer to receive diagnostic reports (it didn't stop onStar from collecting the information, all it did was keep them from having my email address). as it turns out, onstar can retrieve information from your car and share it with other parties including gm and your car dealer (so i did give onStar permission when i signed up). i had wondered what was the catch in the 3 year free period; my thinking was that they were thinking that once people got used to the service that they would want to stay on as a regular subscriber; but then again, 3 years did seem like a rather long trial period.

I am constantly amazed by the number of people that get upset over data collection. There is no such thing as anonymity in a digital society and people should not confuse anonymity with privacy. OnStar is a Chevy requirement for owning the Volt. When you bought the car you agreed to data collection at OnStar's activation. Get over it. If you own a computer and have an internet connection and email you have a digital footprint.
There are many reasons I bought a volt and not the least of which is to support the technology in general. I am thrilled that my Volt's stats are going into the bit bucket to help make the technology viable and better. I applaud GM for doing the hard work they are doing. I only wish more people were paying attention to how "Insanely Great" this car is. If Steve Jobs were alive today you can bet he would have owned one.

i strongly suggest that you ask permission before tracking individual's driving habits. i did not give permission to allow gm to track my driving habits. that's why i declined to sign up for the automatic diagnostics service - because i don't want data being collected unless i request that the data be collected. if this just comes with an on-star activation, then i'll be canceling my on-star activation because i only want data retrieved from my car when i request its retrieval.
