I would love to buy a Volt, but the one and ONLY reason I won't is due to the lack of an HID or LED headlamp system. For a car as technologically advanced as the Volt, and as expensive, it should be equipped with HID headlamps. Going from a vehicle with HID to halogen is just not possible for me. I hope GM/Chevrolet iistens and adds them to the Volt ASAP!

We love our Volt. After 12000 miles we haven't had one problem with it. We have a longer than typical commute (over 60 miles round trip) but are still averaging 120 MPG. After paying for electricity, I'm saving a net of $2000/year in gas over what I was spending before the Volt, and that doesn't even take into consideration the superior ride, handling, comfort and amenities we have with the Volt. I'll likely get the battery protection upgrade, but I'm in no hurry to do so due to the extremely low (non-existent?) risk with leaving the car as-is. When we replace our second car, it will be with another electric. We both prefer the Volt to our ICE car. GM customer service has been outstanding. That GM would even make a buy back offer over this non-existant fire issue (especially since there is a free upgrade fix), goes ways beyond what any other car maker has done.

In my opinion, to really make the VOLT a success is for GM to fill sold orders from both US and Canadian Dealers so that the owners can become the best spokesperson for the vehicle. Advertising a vehicle that you cannot fill demand for is a waste and frustrates customers who have to wait for their ordered vehicle while some dealers have six or more stock units. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT GENERAL MOTORS!
Satisfy the Customer and you will make the money!

There are better and worse HID kits for the volt. The one at the link I gave in another post works fine, and I didn't have to remove one single thing to install it very cleanly. It's not the cheapest out there, it was about $160. It works great. All I had to do is unclip the airbox for the passenger side - that was 100% of the "removed parts" - no tools required. Since I wanted a hermetic install, I did drill the suggested 1" holes in the plug that is behind the bulb to let the wires in and out, with the provided grommet. That was it.

Whoever thinks you have to remove a bumper is simply nuts. It's not that hard! Took me under 30 min start to finish.

I received a letter today from Mark L. Reuss today...1/6/2012 discussing the issue of an NHTSA crash test of the Volt. Today on the O'Reilly Show, Fox network...Leo Dobbs made what I consider a total defamatory set of remarks about Volts burning. I recommend GM seriously investigate this issue. O'Reilly and Dobbs also joked about "that you it had limit battery for driving" and various other subjects that were detrimental to GM.
I am a very satified owner of the Volt...could not be happier.

I have one question. When will there be an option to charge the Volt up to 100% when I am driving it? Yes it's needed at times!
I know it can be done as on my 2007 Prius, and feel it is MY choice and not anyone elses as to the method I use to charge it.
Enough said for that aggravating issue.
PS: I have no intention to bring my new car in for a retrofit for an unreal situation caused by the NHSTA. I also didn't let Toyota cut a half inch off the gas pedal on my 2007 Prius with that make believe chrisis........

To John's # 2307 query -- the OEM Volt Headlights are perhaps the only common compliant that Volt owners have, and my experience with our 2012 Volt was no different. I investigated and then purchased a HID Conversion Kit supposedly designed for the Volt. It turned out it wasn't. In fact, the re-wiring and ballast installation within the Volt's very limited engine bay space would have required the removal of the front bumper in order to fully access the headlight assembly and to install the ballasts and wire-in the HID system -- bottom line, don't go there. I did find a truly plug & play alternative to the Volt's OEM Phillips blub, and one that will greatly improve your night driving safety, as well aslite up the road as close to a full flown HID conversion as possible. The solution is: PIAA 9006 Intense White Bulb , Twin Pack 51w=115w, 4100K.

Can someone explain the revving sound that begins with the electric switching to gas and continues thru the gas cycle until I'm recharged? Also, the peculiarity with the nav system, climate, and the radio all turning at the same time. This is a bit ridiculous and the service department just gives me a lizard blink and a scratch of the head when I try to get these issues addressed.

It's important to get the word out that the Volt is not an Obama car because the political nature of the Volt could jeopardize the great achievement in American ingenuity that it represents. Please spread the word that the Volt and the other new electric cars today are a result of the Republican initiatives that are being continued wisely by the Democrats to stop sending money, jobs, and lives overseas to countries that hate us. http://www.foxnews.com/opinion...ctric-car/

A comment/question for Victor. Given that I believe the ads for the Volt indicated that the range would be between 40 and 80 kms (I'm in Canada) , I'm wondering how anyone can ever get towards the higher range, when even fwhen ully charged people are saying they're starting way lower?! It's very frustrating to be so limited as to how far you can go with batteries alone, don't you think, especially after all the hype? Being told that the car estimates initial ranges based on past driving is not too helpful, is it? I can see starting off high and using up a lot of the battery charge by poor driving habits, but we are not even given a fighting chance.

I had a 240 volt charger installed January 6/2012. It wouldn't charge the Volt. I put the 120 charger in and it charged OK. Installer said GM makes the charger. Have there been other problems like this? Or did I just get a bad charger? SPX is sending me a new 240 volt charger so I'm not complaining. We love the Volt. I'm just curious if there have been any other persons with this problem with the charger?

WE love our VOLT. We will hate not having it when it goes in for this recall on the battery support structure. When someone tries to "discredit" our purchase, we both tell them it is safer than their gas guzzling vehicle. One questions: We noticed a decrease in EV miles per charge since the temperatures dropped with 30. We now have 22 miles per charge instead of 36. Is this a normal change?

My husband commutes 45 miles each way for work, and the last two days he has called me because he met his goal of making it all the way using only battery power! We love everything about our Volt. One question about the side-impact-fire issue: my understanding is that the batteries in those that spontaneously cumbusted had not been drained after the impact. Since wa drain it twice every day, wouldn't we be okay? Assuming, of course, that after such a serious crash we could still drive it home. It sounds, though, as if that severe an impact would ultimately be a wrecking yard's problem while we recovered in hospital . . .

From what I understand, our battery packs won't actually be replaced, the will just be reinforced. Is this true? Also, I have found a number of bugs in the centre console firmware. Is there any where I can send a written up detailed description of the issues that will actually be reviewed by an engineer and not just get binned by the marketing department. I'm willing to put some time into writing these things up but don't want it to be a waste. In the past, I have been referred to my Volt rep. She is very pleasant though I get the impression she has no visibility to anyone beyond customer service.
By the way. I love the car and am getting very annoyed by the bad press. Have any of these people actually seen a Volt?

Here's some great improvements on the Volt's lighting - I've done some of this myself. After putting in the HID mod, I've got the best lights since back in the days with 4 headlights and the hack that let you run both high and low beams at once. Really outstanding. I'm planning to do the LED mods as well. Listen up GM - this isn't that expensive and it works great.

2 main problems.

1. The battery range was advertised as being from 40-80 kms. Although I understand that the battery range is determined by such factors as the manner of driving, climate control, etc. our volt recently only starts off with about 43-46 kms, WHEN FULLY CHARGED!

2, Recently, even though fully charged, several times the battery has slipped without warning from battery to gas mode and then back again. A rep at GM said this was not normal. We reserve the right to consider getting our money back, but for the time being can we at least get a new battery installed, one which hopefully would give us a greater range when fully charged, and one that would not kick in and out for no reason?

Boy, out come the astroturfers and the people who are trying to get more than they paid for. I love my volt, bought it after the battery flap was known about. Anything that stores that much energy (which of course, includes gasoline) is dangerous if let loose. Personally, a thermite type fire - a long time after a crash, scares me a lot less than a flaming fireball from gasoline does.
Funny how all the oil-money-taking right wing nuts (and hey, I'm a conservative) bemoan the loss of American jobs and innovation, then jump on this when it's a prime example of something innovative, and built here. I'm an engineer - good enough to have become wealthy from it, and I'm impressed, frankly.

Remember, first responders are trained to disconnect batteries in ANY car after a crash. NHSTA is therefore less competent than your average ambulance driver or fireman - they didn't do this, just towed the wreck to a lot and let it sit. That's not predictive of real life at all.

I don't plan to return my Volt, and I probably won't get this fix either - the guys at the dealership (not just GM has this problem) aren't in the same league as the guys who build these cars, and if it ain't broke - why let them "fix" it? If you look at where that fix goes - you are likely dead already if it's actually needed. This car is no pinto!

There's a non-GM volt forum people might want to check out with plenty discussion of this and other things Volt-related.
http://gm-volt.com/forum/index.php - hit the "what's new" button to see what we are talking about.

Yes, the headlights were on the wimpy side. Not being a complainer, I simply installed an HID mod another volt forum member suggested, and am planning to install the super bright LED bulbs in some other places to improve the lighting. Yeah, it should have been right from the factory, but GM's "theater lighting" doesn't work out too well with HID bulbs that don't dim. In my case, the "photon torpedoes" are a real improvement - and really didn't cost much.

Both my husband and I are thrilled with the Volt and we've not purchased an American made vehicle in several years. The volt performance is more than we expected and the learning curve for new technology continues to inspire. We concur with other owners who are disappointed with the headlight performance. Please work on that. Two questions.

Where do we find how many gallons of gasoline this car can hold. We've read in different places, five, seven and nine. Which is it.

What's going on with the car bottoming out whenever we enter and exit parking lots or driveways? We increased the tire pressure to 40 or 41 lbs and that helped some. Our local dealer said, that's how the car was built...but we're not buying that. Please explain.

Thanks for your work to make this first addition vehicle safe.

I've been thrilled with the car. After 5 weeks, we've used 6 gallons of gas. Acceleration is good enough when I need it, the heat is mroe than adequate (an initial worry after the 2011's tepid output), and the handling feel is awesome. I do have some questions.

1. What determines the starting mileage number after a full charge? It says 28 now. Presumably its based on the outside temperature and climate settings but, since it lives in a heated garage (50F), I would think the number would be fairly steady.

2. Since I'm not sure when the friction brakes engage, I've been driving it in low and just feathering the gas pedal, being mindful of the fact that there are no brakelights with this method. Besides the light issue, is there anything else I should know?

My ownership experience has been stellar. This is the best car I've ever owned (including a BMW) so I am only hoping they don't make this modification mandatory. The car really doesn't need it. After a crash like the one simulated, I will have more than a week to either remove myself from the vehicle or have emergency crews do it. This battery "issue" is all hype. I drove a Prius for 5 years and the amount of mileage I got with each battery charge remained steady around 50m per charge. My car was hit by a deer (my car was not moving)and both left doors and panels were damaged, and it has been in the shop for the last 10 days. My body shop called today and told me that they have ordered a part three times and have received the wrong part all three times. The part is the vertical post black-out tape for the left side (goes between the doors). When they tried to order a fourth time, they were told it's unavailable. I asked them to re-assemble the door and move it over to my GM dealership, so they can check the battery, so I can get my car back!

Two questions: First, When can they get this part for my car (it's just a piece of tape but an important one!)? Secondly, how can I get $70 (body shop cost) from GM to pay for the dis-assembling and re-assembling of the doors when the piece does come in? I don't feel that I should have to pay for this or ask my insurance company to add this to my original claim.

I do like my vehicle very much and am looking forward to driving it again. Thank you.

So far my experience with this purchase has been less than ideal. because the car was going overseas, i also had to purchase a 240volt charger. upon inspection this box was only a passthrough box where a male 240 volts was changed to a female connection. there was no conversion from AC to DC...just a simple passthrough. this is when i know i would have a problem with the battery.
The box with led lights will never work because the voltage in mi country is 220 from 1 face to neutral. The 240 in USA is
2 faces of 120 plus neutral

I am upset and here is the reason why--Chevolet has offered to buy back my Volt but I was told that GM would require me to sign a form that states I will give any Tax credit for the Volt I receive on my taxes from the IRS back to Chevolet. From what I have read in the tax code, this would be in violation of the code or circumventing the tax code since it clearly states that the tax credit is not for a reseller. When I told this to the Chevolet representative last Wednesday night, after she called me telling me that GM would buy back the Volt with this stipulation, she then declined to give me an offer in writing (she had first said she would send me an email with the offer and the paperwork to sign giving the tax credit back to GM) for selling back my Volt to GM and purchasing another GM product. In fact, we were never given the total amount GM was offering to buy back the Volt from us for, just that GM would buy the Volt back and we would then purchase another GM product we looked at that they had the VIN number on. She stated again that the offer was with the understanding that the tax credit on the Volt would be given back to GM if we received it and this totally ridiculous. Thus, Gm wants to buy back my Volt, depreciate it for the mileage it as been driven and then receive my tax credit (up to $7500) for purchasing the car and the tax code says this tax credit for electric vehicles is for the consumer only, is crazy. Furthermore, when GM buys back the car , the car we purchase as its replacement, we cant even get any rebates on it from GM because they bought back the VOLT, thus we are not entited to rebates on another vehicle! I would be better off to sell the Volt outright and puchase another vehicle (and any brand I wanted not just GM) and get the same rebates offered on a vehicle everyone else would get buying a new vehicle. If the Volt's true value is depreciated at $7,500 plus mileage in less than a year, then the Volt resale value would have to be a consideration for future Volt purchasers. Plan on keeping the car forever since you would have to sell the car a hugh loss to be able to sell it at all. This might be what Chevrolet wants anyway since they are having problems moving their Volt inventory. The average first year depreciation on the first year of this valued car is $3750 and a high rate of depreciation would be $5000. We were told when we complained about having to sign a document giving our tax credit back that our case would be escalated up to GM if we wanted her to do so and we said yes...and we have heard nothing else from GM! WE currently own four GM vehicles and are good return customers who feel like GM is trying to take advantage of us!

No mechanical or electrical issues issues with our Volt.. Its tucked away for the winter (on its charger of course) while we winter in Florida.

But I do have two items that are less then perfect: 1. The Headlights or lighting system seems a bit back dated and not in keeping with a car of this nature and cost. They do not provide any cornering light as they are very focused for distance. I would have thought GM would have provided better lighting. Two of our other vehicles (BMW and MBenz) don't have this problem. Can side cornering lights be added? Can headlights with a wider beam be retrofitted? and 2. The gasket around the drivers door is wearing out due to the driver rubbing against it when entering and exiting the car. Its actually shredding. Will have dealer replace when battery safety engineering change is done but have you had simular complaints and is there a fix or new type of gasket that can be used?

Thanks and keep up the good work at GM
