The EV Grin

in my sleep premiere arclight 2010Note: For more from Alexandra, visit the "Ask Alexandra" tab on the Chevrolet Volt Facebook page.

The “EV grin” is the smile virtually everyone gets when they drive an electric car for the first time.  It is an automatic response to experiencing its smooth silent ride. No matter how cool you try to be, within moments the sides of your mouth will creep up. Press on the accelerator for the instant torque and you cannot help but emit a "Wow," or smile even more.

When you get your Volt, invite your most jaded, too-cool-for-school friend to drive the car and you shall see what I mean!

A few days ago, a prospective Volt driver drove my Volt. Tim had never driven one before, and he marveled at how quiet it was and what great acceleration it had in EV mode. He liked how it handled and how sturdy it felt, which was exactly what my friend Adam said two days ago when he took the car for a spin. They both had EV grins!   It is that sense of wonderment over human ingenuity, and the possibility of a better world, which makes us soften and smile.

If more politicians and generals drove a Volt, maybe we would have less wars.

In my Volt, I have used one gallon of gasoline over 311 miles. I am hoping to get it to 400 mpg!  Now that gives me an EV grin!

Alexandra Paul is a longtime electric vehicle advocate, actress and former EV1 driver. She is working with Chevrolet to educate consumers about EVs and the Volt. Full disclosure, Chevrolet is paying her for her time, but her opinions will always be hers.

How are you generating the electricity? I like the Volt, except for the high purchase price, but plugging into a dirty coal powered electricity grid takes the smile away. When we perfect fusion power the EV's will come into their own, more so with the shocking Obama gas prices we have now. Take care.

I could not even contain my excitement about the volt. I am a born Detroiter....still waiting for my Volt's arrival, but I so had the biggest EV grin ever when I got to see it and drive in it for the very first time ever at the North American International Autoshow.

I too got my first "EV Grin" back in 1999 when I rented a EV1 at LAX for two days... drove the car all over the LA area and made converts of a few sceptics. The EV1 was a very expensive demonstration of what a true EV could be.. it will be a while before we see a EV as efficient as the EV1... but in some ways the Volt is better than the EV1.... no range anxiety and it costs about one third as much as the EV1 to build and still can create many a EV GRIN!

For Volt to truly be revolutionary factor in $5 gas prices and average drive for most drivers 60 miles to 70 miles a day. Therefore if a charge can take you 100 miles a day that would bring the cost of driving back to pre-bush levels. 100 miles per gallon of electric/gas fueled vehicles is an economic imperative and the only thing that will cause most Americans to trade out of the cars. It would make Chevrolet Billions almost overnight.
At 35 miles on a charge and 37 gas I do not really see the benefit to purchase as of it. And with gas prices predicted to move to $5 a gallon I am still not moved to spend the money or finance it. There is no significant benefit as of it.
100 mpg plus on average and 700 miles plus on a full tank is a better motivation.

This is the best, most beautiful description of the EV Grin phenomenon I have ever seen.

Dare ya! I dare anyone NOT to break into an Alexandra-type EV grin when stepping on an electric vehicle's accelerator as you powerfully whisper past those noisy, belching, hesitant gas cars at a stoplight.

I really don't smile alot. I really tend not to smile when making a multi-year financial commitment. I REALLY tend not to smile when I'm trying to look cool (a substantial effort on my part).
Pulling silently away from the dealer, I couldn't help myself (so much for cool).
