Electrify Your Driving and Place Your Chevrolet Volt Order Today

Volt_Pricing_FbStarting today, you can take part in history by placing your order for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. This moment is the culmination of several years of around-the-clock, steadfast work and I know I speak for the entire Volt team when I say we couldn’t be more excited!

For those of you looking to be among the first to own a Volt, simply locate and contact a participating Chevrolet dealer in Volt launch markets at GetMyVolt.com. Once your order is placed, a Volt customer advisor will contact you to answer questions and keep you updated on the progress of your order.

We’ve also pulled together a team of Volt advisors who, beginning today, will be available at 1-888-VOLT4YOU (1-888-865-8496) to answer general questions. The Volt will initially be available to customers in California, New York, Washington, D.C., Texas, Michigan, Connecticut and New Jersey, but will be available nationwide in about 12-18 months from start of production this winter.

As far as the price, the Volt’s official MSRP is $41,000 – or $33,500 (including DFC) after the $7,500 U.S. Federal income tax credit. We are so confident in the resale value of the Volt, we will also offer a lease program with monthly payments as low as $350 (based on a 36-month term lease and $2,500 down), which also includes a lease-to-buy option.

Why are we so confident?

The Volt is an electric vehicle that gives you the freedom to drive wherever you want, whenever you want. With the Volt’s extended-range capability, you can drive electrically up to 340 miles on a full battery and tank of gas, with up to the first 40 miles powered by electricity from the grid. Plus, the Volt is an electric vehicle for all climates and seasons, comfortable in the freezing temperatures of the Northeast to the scorching temperatures of the deserts out West – we know, we’ve tested the Volt extensively in these conditions.

Plus, the Volt comes standard with an unprecedented battery warranty – eight years or 100,000 miles on all 161 battery components, the thermal management system, charging system and electric drive components. It will also be the first Chevrolet vehicle to offer, at no additional cost, five years of OnStar Directions and Connections service, which includes automatic crash response, stolen vehicle assistance and connected navigation.

And speaking of OnStar, the Volt gives you an unprecedented level of connectivity with the Chevrolet Connect mobile app by OnStar. This Volt mobile and web-based app will allow you to set the charge time, start your Volt, track mileage, unlock the doors and much more from your smart phone and even your home computer.

In fact, the personalized and connected ownership experience is just getting into full swing when you take delivery of your Volt because we’re creating a website designed specifically for Volt owners to collect diagnostic information as well as track and share your vehicle’s performance.

I could go on and on all day about all the benefits and premium features the Volt has to offer, such as screen-based navigation, an energy-efficient Bose premium sound system, Bluetooth for phone with phone book access and more, but then I would be keeping you from locating your dealer and placing your order. You can find more info at GetMyVolt.com.

It’s been a remarkable journey, and we’re confident you’ll be delighted with the outcome when you receive your Volt. The future is electric – we hope you’ll join us for the ride.

And make sure to join me here on Voltage later today for a video webchat from the show floor of Plug-In 2010 where Volt vehicle line director Tony Posawatz and I will answer your questions live at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.

Penn State's EcoCAR team of engineerings is working to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles by designing, developing and implementing a vehicle system that minimizes petroleum consumption and emissions and encourages energy diversity, while still maintaining utility, safety and performance. The EcoCAR team is currently working to refine their vehicles to near-production level readiness for the third year of our competition. We are currently competing against 16 universities across North America to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles by designing, developing and implementing a vehicle system that minimizes petroleum consumption and emissions and encourages energy diversity, while still maintaining utility, safety and performance. We hope to develop an environmentally friendly car like the Volt. It has been an amazing opportunity to gain more experience in real-world vehicle engineering at a time when fuel economy, emissions and other environmental impacts are even more important than ever.
The student engineers are working to develop and validate our technology designs, but we’re working closely with our engineering mentors from GM and other sponsors to help make sure we’re on the right track. These technologies are complex, but it’s really exciting to be working on something so important to society. For further information about EcoCAR, Please take a look at the Penn State EcoCAR website at www.hev.psu.edu and the EcoCAR Challenge website at www.ecocarchallenge.org.

I will get one as soon as possible. I think $41,000 is fair. It's new and a lot of R&D went into its development. The bottom line is that I want to encourage this sort of behavior by an auto manufacturer by voting with my dollars. If you factor in the high cost of oil (which is subsidized), this care is cheap. Your electric bill will be much less than the cost of gasoline. Since it runs on electricity "no war is necessary" to supply its fuel.

I love the comment hat GM should sell the car cheaper and make it up on volume! This guy wants GM to lose more money per car, sell more of them, and probably complains about the bailout too. Hello? Math not your strong suit.....? The Volt looks great, and like any other innovative new product, they will easily sell all they can make to early adopters. Lowering the price would not accomplish anything at this stage. Once they can roll out in volume ( a few years away ) then if it has been a success with the early adopters, then they can set the price properly.

Chevy is making a grave error in charging $41K for this car out of the box. I understand there are lots of R&D and startup costs to recover, but Chevy needs to use this car to CREATE the market and then profit by being the first/only in that market. I would LOVE to have one of these cars but I can't afford the price tag and it really ticks me off. I have talked to many others who feel the same. Marketing this car at a "normal" price (20K - 25K) would drive production, jobs, sales, and make Chevy the LEADER in everyday electric vehicles. The entire market that flock to Honda/Toyota small hybrids now would jump on this car. By overcharging they are going to set themselves back until other auto makers catch up and then Volt will not be anything special. The marketing disaster here is inevitable.

While my initial Volt buying experience with Kevil Chevrolet in Budd Lake, NJ was less than perfect, Peter Pellack (their sales manager) gave me a call and explained there was considerable confusion within the team about the Volt options and availability, but that Kevil was committed to giving me a great experience. He is working to get me a Volt and we agreed that it is probably a better policy to have people go to the dealership to discuss the options rather than get poor information over the phone.

I hope and expect to have a great experience with Kevil and my Volt moving forward and really appreciate that Peter took the time and effort to make this right!

Hi... does this thing have air conditioning?? Living in Arizona I sure hope so! How does it work. Does the AC run off the gas engine or on batteries. I'd imagine it'd drain the batteries pretty quickly. Anyway... didn't see anything about air conditioning on the website. On the same note... how about heat in the winter? Same question, do you need the engine to run for heat or is it run off the batteries.

So I called to place my order for a Volt at Kevil Chevrolet in Budd Lake, NJ and the sales rep tells me that in order to hold a vehicle I would need to put a deposit of $10,000. Not to lease or to buy, but just to hold the car... WHAT??? I went on to explain that I wanted to place my order and I would be happy to give my $3K now and take delivery in Dec... Kevil's answer - $10K to hold the car. "But I am willing to buy/lease the car right now (even though I have not driven this first gen, untested, designed during a bankruptcy car)..." - doesn't matter $10,000... I would like to talk to a manager... answer - they are the ones telling them to get $10K "holding fee"... I suppose I will be buying a Ford, but Chevy this is not my preference and if you are willing to lease me a Volt I am willing to buy (lease) one. I fundamentally like what you are doing here, but perhaps you should put some rules of engagement in place to deal with bad behavior at the dealer level.

I've been following the Volt since the first day the concept was announced. The car is an amazing piece of technology. But learning that the price will be $41,000 made my heart sink. The price puts it nowhere even close- even with the tax rebates- to being a sedan the majority of Americans can afford. I myself make a pretty good income and so too does my Wife. But I simply can't fathom paying this kind of money for this or any other car.

Price the Volt at 30-35k and maybe now we're talking. $41,000 is way too high.

written by Doug Wernert, July 29, 2010
Hi everyone,

I'm Doug Wernert from the Volt team. Sorry some of you were having trouble placing your order. The best thing to do is first find a participating Volt dealer (which you can do on GetMyVolt.com). When you contact the dealer, ask to speak with a Volt specialist to place an order.

Here's how it works:
Once you place an order, you'll be contacted by a Volt customer advisor who will provide more information. Once the order is accepted by Chevrolet, you'll be contacted again and given an order number. You can track your order and the build of your car through a new website, which will be available in the future.

Once you have your order number, you should determine whether or not you want a 240V charger installed. This would allow you to recharge your battery in about 4 hours. You can also charge the battery in about 10 hours on a standard 120 volt outlet. Chevrolet is also working with a partner that will assist customers in installing 240-volt stations in their homes. We'll have more information on that closer to launch.

I hope that helps.

I'm having a hard time understanding how GM is going to launch this car. If they are only going to produce 10k units this next year and they are limiting it to 689 dealers in selected states, that means that every dealer will be able to sell one Chevy Volt a month. What am I missing; or, better still what is the bankrupt GM management thinking? The old GM went upside down because they mismanaged the business. The Volt maybe a great car with huge potential but pissing off the waiting list of people who want to buy it doesn't make much sense.

I called a local dealer on the list and the response was "don't waste your time, we won't get very many and I've already had over 100 people wanting the car". How stupid. Doesn't improve my image of the "New GM". It's great to have pent up demand but be a little smarter on how you decide to launch. With Nissan, BMW and VW coming out with electric cars, GM isn't going to be in the driver's seat for very long. As a potential buyer, I'm not impressed. Nice work Tony.......(I'm assuming you will never read this blog).

My NJ dealer was not very well prepared for this either. However, that said I DO have an order number from GM. Dealers ARE able to order these. What they don't know yet is their individual allocations, nor when production might begin. They also don't have details about the leasing and all that, surprisingly, at least my dealer hadn't even heard of the lease deal yet.

I have to say that GM/Chevrolet didn't handle this very well. Here they announced that you can go to your dealer to order, yet even their own websites are sorely lacking in information, don't show complete pricing, std and optional equipment, color selection and so on. There is that kind of information in the dealer order guide, but how does that help the consumer? Very uncoordinated marketing.

Just like a second is a measurement of time and a liter is a Measurement of liquid, a watt is a unit measure of power, just like horsepower. A kilowatt is a measure of 1,000 watt of electrical power. The electric motor in a Volt will output about 111 kilowatts. One kW is roughly equivalent to 1 1/3 hp, so Volt's 111 kW electric motor can also be described as approximately 150 hp motor.

In the answers part I read the above. I think 11/3 hp appears to be incorrect since it would translate to over 300 hp instead of 150 hp. Probably it should read 11/8 hp and not 11/3 hp.

Severely overpriced! If you buy a $25k car that gets around 30 MPG and you drive 25000 per year you are probably paying Apx $2000 in gas each year.

$25000 - $41000 = $16000 / 2000 = 8

Not even considering your increased power bill It's gonna take you at least 8 years to make up the price difference if this turns out to be on par with an Accord, Altima, Malibu or Camery. If turns out to be comparable to a Civic it will be even worse.

The Volt is a great piece of technology. The function of the power system and its ability to offer a truly useful, ultralow fuel consumption number are game changers. I fear however that GMs marketing department has allowed its price point to conflict with its brand image and this mistake will disconnect it from the type of buyers that will pay that level of premium for this technology.

Why is this car branded a Chevrolet? At this price point, Buick or maybe even Cadillac badges and trim would be more palatable to the typical hybrid buyer. With some exceptions (trucks and Corvette) the customers of the Chevy brand are generally more blue collar, budget conscious, and tend to have spent less time climbing the higher education scale. So to begin with, most existing Chevy drivers do not buy into the global climate change hysteria that fuels most hybrid purchases and therefore do not highly value the current crop of technological boondoggles. If fuel economy is a priority, Chevy buyers are aware of better-equipped alternatives available at price points that make more economic sense.

Beyond the current Chevrolet customer, most of those other highly educated individuals who DO follow the climate change faith and have already invested in hybrids, have done so with the full knowledge that current hybrids do NOT make any economic sense and have therefore been driving them largely for the emotional value and image that they project to other members of their faith. The Chevrolet brand image will not play well to this typical image-conscious and well-heeled hybrid buyer. By labeling and equipping the Volt as one of the more up-market GM brands, it would allow today's typical hybrid buyer to maintain that proper level of status befitting someone of their superior education and enlightened social values.

The Volt is a great piece of engineering; I just hope that incompetent marketing does not mean that it is already doomed to the Edsel and Fiero dustbin.

So that is about a 10,000 dollar premium on a Ford Fusion Hybrid, which is one of Car and Driver's Ten Best. Plus its all new technology and first generation cars of existing tech are usually glitchy.
