Volt is a pure electric vehicle with the feature of on-board charging when the battery gets low on charge. My experience driving one at around 80MPH when the charge fell to the point the engine started, it was totally transparent. I could not tell it had happened other than the great dash display which shows power flow. It is a disservice to Volt to call it a hybrid. All drive is always electric. It can be pure battery electric all the time with a range that accomodates 80% of American commutes. In fact, a simple 110V plug-in during the work day essentially doubles the all electric range. Customers have been reporting over 1,000 miles per 9.3 gallon tank of gas! Of course, they also pay between $1.00 & $1.50 for each recharge.

The Volt is plenty zippy but in Extended Range it is even more zippy. It is extremely fast from zero to around 40 mph.

With the rise of emergent economies like china and india driving global demand for petroleum, it will be important to be able to use non-petroleum-sourced energy for our domestic transportation needs- because with them driving demand upwards, prices are bound to go that way too. This will be both difficult and opportune- difficult, because transitions away from existing technologies and infrastructure are expensive, but opportune in that we can grow our own domestic energy markets to fulfill our own energy needs.
the volt is, I think, an important step towards being able to pick your energy source for transportation- and because electricity is so much cheaper than gasoline, it creates the potential for domestic electricity to compete against foreign oil for your energy dollar- which, in turn, promises to provide downward pressure on price spikes in petroleum.
we are not there yet. the volt is a very good start, but it's too expensive for most. our electric grid will need a lot of improvements if it's to support broad-based electrical demands like fueling vehicles.

I LIKE THE IDEA OF THE VOLT, BUT WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU LIVE IN AN APARTMENT, AND YOU DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO AN ELECTRICAL OUTLET ?

How much will the Volt cost and when will it be on the market for the average Joe to buy? All so if I find that I can afford it how do I get on the waiting list and how long is it?

Sounds good. I mean its an improvement.... But we /I'm into larger SUVs and lots of room. You know. For this and that. Like for when going on a road trip coast to coast. And I know in that case. I would prefer unlimited range and thats what we have been working on doing and that is exactly what we are now able to do.

Cheers !

I know that once my Saturn Redline gives up the ghost, I'll be driving an electric car. My question is: when the Volt is in "extended mode" will it perform *as well*? or will it be more of a "limp mode" until it gets electrically recharged?
K.L., we are at war with some of these OPEC nations, so, no: I'm not worrying about "*increasing* tensions". We are guilty of funding their wealth while they kill our boys. Removing ourselves from the oil market will also make oil more plentiful for our diesel trucking economy, which can't run on electricity. It seems to me the patriotic and globally eco-friendly move to make (switching to an electric car)

Creating electricity does create emissions, love the volt concept, but has anyone thought about the tensions this will cause with OPEC? P.S. I am pro nuclear with the reprocessing too, go chevy
